With a longstanding history of providing expert-quality geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing, environmental testing, and more, to clients spanning across the nation, UES is thrilled to expand our already extensive list of services to include petrographic testing and a National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) accredited asbestos lab through SUMMIT Engineering, Laboratory & Testing, a UES company.
Petrographic Testing
Petrographic testing identifies problems with new or existing concrete and determines the current state of a concrete mass. As concrete is a man-made conglomerate, over time the product may deteriorate, crack, and cause long term instability. Petrography provides information on the type, proportion and reactivity of different constituents, on-going deterioration mechanisms, and potential for future deterioration. Cary W. Caruso, PhD, PE, Project Manager & Petrographer at SUMMIT’s Raleigh office has over 10 years of experience in various engineering disciplines and has concentrated on the petrographic analysis of concrete for the last 5 years.
Numerous questions may be answered using petrography. Since the current state of any concrete reflects its history, petrography can answer questions about how that history has affected its current state. In situations where critical structures could cost our client millions of dollars to replace, a petrographer can likely determine the current state of the concrete to help determine a repair solution or if a repair is even needed. Our team can assist in pricing proposals, make recommendations for sample collection, or devise a testing sequence for the most cost-effective analysis of both normal and degrading concrete, all at competitive pricing. In fact, if you find a lower price, our team will match it!

Asbestos Laboratory
Located in Charlotte, North Carolina, SUMMIT’s new NVLAP-accredited asbestos laboratory is a highly specialized facility that offers testing services to determine the presence and levels of asbestos in various materials, such as building materials, soil, and air. Through this, our team can accurately and reliably detect and measure asbestos fibers. Our lab is staffed by highly trained professionals who follow strict protocols and procedures to ensure that samples are collected, handled, and analyzed correctly.
We are thrilled to offer a wide range of testing services, including bulk sample analysis, air monitoring, and soil testing. Bulk sample analysis involves collecting and analyzing samples of suspected asbestos-containing materials, such as ceiling tiles, insulation, and floor tiles. Air monitoring includes collecting air samples to determine airborne asbestos fibers levels in a particular area, while soil testing involves analyzing samples of soil to determine the presence and levels of asbestos fibers. By working with a trusted, accredited lab like SUMMIT’s, you can be confident that your results are accurate, reliable, and compliant with industry standards and regulations.
