Eagle Shadow Mountain Solar Project

Eagle Shadow Mountain Solar Project was the largest solar installation to date built on tribal land and was also the largeest solar PV project ever built for NV Energy. This 300-megawatt (MW) project was built on the Moapa River Indian Reservation in Clark County, Nevada about 30 miles north of Las Vegas. The project was also part of NV Energy’s plans to retire a 254 MW coal-fired unit in a power-constrained region of Nevada at the end of 2021. 

Environmental permitting and compliance support services involved evaluating approximately 5,000 thousand acres with:

  • Surveys, health assessments, translocations, and reporting for federally protected species, including the desert tortoise.
  • Migratory Bird Surveys
  • Eagle and Raptor Surveys
  • Evaluation and permitting for disturbance of waters of the United States regulated under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act
  • Application to the Public Utilities Commission – Utilities Environmental Protection Act

The Mohave Sunrise Solar Phase II project sits on the northern third, about 80 acres of a single parcel totaling approximately 220 acres developed with a photovoltaic electric generation facility. 

UES provided information and geotechnical engineering recommendations relative to subsurface soil conditions, general geology of the area, foundation design and construction, retaining wall design and construction, floor slab design and construction, pavement design and construction, and earthwork. 

The scope of UES’s services for this project included a subsurface exploration program. The subsurface exploration program consisted of drilling twelve borings to approximately 20 feet below existing site grades.

Copper Mountain Solar 5

Copper Mountain Solar 5 is a 315 MW AC Solar project with a substation and transmission line. UES provided third-party materials testing and inspections as required for the owner to obtain a permit from the City of Boulder City. On-site improvements included field density testing and observations during utility backfill operations and access road subgrade. 

The UES structural services included reinforced concrete inspection, drilled pier foundations, driven pile foundations, structural steel inspection, epoxy, and mechanical anchor inspection.

UES provided a 2D Subsurface Utility Map (SUM) and Utility Engineering (SUE) of the proposed construction of a new building near the existing PDC Building. The SUM model followed general accordance with ASCE 38-22 and utilized several geophysical techniques including GPR, RF, TDEM, and FDEM. Additionally, a mobile laser scan was performed to help give the model some context. Construction value is unknown.

TVA Solar Panel Field

This 40-acre solar array is a partnership between Ameresco and the City of Alton, Illinois to develop a 5 megawatt AC (MWAC)/7 megawatt DC (MWDC) solar array. The solar installation will be developed on a local closed municipal landfill site in the city.

UES provided geotechnical exploration services consisting of site reconnaissance, drilling six borings, laboratory testing, engineering analyses, and preparation of summary report. The project includes the installation of solar panels in a vacant field in East Alton, Illinois. The panels were mounted at-grade on concrete pedestals, which were oversized for uplift and overturning. Recommendations for design and construction of the proposed solar panel foundations were also provided.

UES completed a geotechnical exploration for the Ameren Solar Farm in Richwoods, Missouri. The project consisted of the development of a solar farm located at the southwest corner of State Route 47 and Valle Road in Richwoods, Missouri. The purposes of the geotechnical exploration were to develop a general subsurface profile at the site and prepare recommendations for the geotechnical aspects of the design and construction of the project. Our scope of services included site reconnaissance, geotechnical borings, shear wave velocity survey, laboratory testing, engineering analyses, and preparation of an engineering report.

In the construction of the 74-megawatt facility, encompassing over 750 acres, UES provided technicians to implement appropriate field monitoring and testing programs for quality assurance in Earthwork Compaction Testing. Our technicians obtained samples and performed laboratory analyses to determine moisture–density relationship as well as performed appropriate field testing to determine in-place moisture/density conditions. We collected samples of ready-mix concrete and provided ACI certified field technicians to verify mix properties as well as cast cylinders to determine compressive strength. Additionally, we supplied a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) to visually inspect all required welds.

The Yellow Pine Solar Project is a 500MW photovoltaic solar farm developed in Pahrump, Nevada and encompasses approximately 3,000 acres. The project has the potential to contribute approximately $297 million to the local economy and supply enough clean electricity for roughly 100,000 households. 

In partnership with Kiewit Corporation, UES is currently providing QC, shaft, bolt, and welding inspections, as well as compaction testing. UES is performing Quality Control Services for this project and has extensive experience working side-by-side with Contractors in a QC capacity.

Florida Gulf Coast University Solar Field

Florida Gulf Coast University Solar Field

UES provided geotechnical drilling and engineering, plan review, inspections and materials testing services for the FGCU Solar Field. Florida Gulf Coast University has completed the construction of a 15-acre solar photovoltaic array that produces approximately 85 percent of the energy needed to operate its Engineering and Business School buildings, as well as AB-7, the science laboratory and classroom building for the College of Arts and Sciences. The University’s total reliance on Florida Power & Light Co. is reduced by 18 percent, thanks to the power generated by rows of solar panels that tilt and rotate as they “follow” the sun throughout the day.
