The Grand Cyprus project included the construction of a new, multi-family residential development on the west side of Winter Garden Vineland Road (across from Grand Cypress Golf Course) in Orlando, Florida. The site plan indicated four buildings, each being four-story, wood-framed apartments and associated parking/drive areas.

UES provided eight Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) borings within the proposed apartment building footprints to a depth of 40 below existing land surface (bls) and ten SPT borings within the proposed pavement/exfiltration trench areas to a depth of 15 feet bls.

UES served as the geotechnical consultant for the Atlanta Braves Spring Training Facility. This included the Stadium Structure, Clubhouse, and Academy Structures and the entire sitework development, stormwater management ponds, and earthwork for infrastructure. The project entailed a deep soil Improvement for foundation support of the stadium structure. UES also supervised the geotechnical test borings for the site development, lab tests, and soil classifications for foundation recommendations.

Miami Beach Convention Center Renovation, Expansion and Park Pavilion

Miami Beach Convention Center Renovation, Expansion and Park Pavilion

This project included the renovation and expansion of the existing Miami Beach Convention Center with the addition of a two-story ballroom and meeting space with parking located on the roof of the north and west addition. Additionally, the project includes the construction of a park pavilion just west of Convention Center Drive. The pavilion consists of a concrete structure that incorporates “umbrellas” that make up the roof and exterior shading spaces located in the City of Miami Beach, Florida.

UES served as Geotechnical Engineer of Record for all construction aspects, which included deep foundations for the structures and ground improvement for roadways with areas with the difficult ground.

UES also served as the materials testing and inspections firm for the City of Miami Beach for the renovation. Services include welding inspections, concrete field and laboratory testing, field and laboratory testing, fireproofing inspections, deep foundation inspections, floor flatness testing, pull testing, and general earthwork observations and consulting.

Ziggaraut Building

Ziggaraut Building

The iconic Ziggaraut building contains an innovative seismic damping system utilized to reduce the amount of steel used in the framing system and to enable the structure to better withstand seismic ground shaking. The 10-story administrative office building is located southwesterly from the corner of Second and G Streets and a five-story parking structure covering the city block bordered by Second, Third, F, and G Streets. The office structure and parking garage are founded on driven precast, prestressed concrete piles.

UES completed the geotechnical engineering investigation that included a site-specific ground response analysis used by the structural engineer to design the seismic damping system incorporated into the frame of the structure. UES also observed and tested earthwork construction, pile installation, and construction materials for the project.

Florida Gulf Coast University Solar Field

UES provided geotechnical drilling and engineering, plan review, inspections and materials testing services for the FGCU Solar Field. Florida Gulf Coast University has completed the construction of a 15-acre solar photovoltaic array that produces approximately 85 percent of the energy needed to operate its Engineering and Business School buildings, as well as AB-7, the science laboratory and classroom building for the College of Arts and Sciences. The University’s total reliance on Florida Power & Light Co. is reduced by 18 percent, thanks to the power generated by rows of solar panels that tilt and rotate as they “follow” the sun throughout the day.

UES’ Riverside office was awarded a $223,710 contract from the Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians/Augustine Casino to support the construction of the Tribe’s new headquarters/administration building and new annex building in Coachella, California. Our team initially provided geotechnical observations for this project. With the support of our Las Vegas office, UES is providing third party plan checking of all civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, and fire life safety plans; building official services and building inspections that included plumbing, mechanical and electrical. UES was responsible for the oversight and supervision of the mechanical start-up of all equipment working with the commissioning agent.

This three-story building includes a 120-seat lecture hall, seven lecture classrooms (totaling 315 stations), three computer labs, lecture/lab support spaces, faculty offices, administrative offices, and ancillary support offices. 

UES was contracted to provide geotechnical and quality assurance inspection and testing services to the project, including those associated with reinforced concrete, masonry, field welding, epoxy anchors and bolting, NDE of welds, and fireproofing. Our laboratory provided all concrete and masonry compression testing and fireproofing density testing services for the project.

Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center

Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center

The luxury Gaylord Chula Vista Resort & Convention Center is the centerpiece of the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan, a decade-long joint planning effort by the Port of San Diego, the City of Chula Vista, and a coalition of stakeholders. The project will create a premier meeting, convention, and luxury resort with a 22-story hotel tower showcasing 1,600 hotel rooms, including 89 suites with views of San Diego Bay. Amenities will feature a spa, recreational facilities, a pool with a lazy river, and bike and boat rentals. The convention center is state-of-the-art and will contain flexible indoor and outdoor event space, restaurants and lounges, meeting rooms, an elevated ballroom, and the largest exhibit hall in California.

The construction of the 240-foot hotel tower is cast-in-place concrete. Concrete shear wall cores with coupled walls resist high seismic loads in the San Diego area. While the width of the building is only 70 feet, the length is over 700 feet long. The tower also articulates in plan with several 45-degree turns, posing a significant challenge for a post-tensioned slab design. The designs use a combination of shear wall blades and closure pours to ensure an efficient slab thickness. The Conference Center and Exhibit Hall will be steel structures and utilize Buckling Restraint Brace frames for seismic resistance. These braced frames consist of a steel core wrapped in concrete and then covered by another layer of steel.

UES recently performed the updated geotechnical investigation, the updated Phase 1 Environmental Report, the Environmental Soil Management Plan, and the Hazardous Materials Evaluation of the remaining buildings to be demolished. Our team currently provides all onsite geotechnical, environmental, and materials testing and special inspection services during construction. The project will consist of more than 50,000 cubic yards of grading, surcharged building pads, and 1,700 Auger Cast Pile foundations.

North Texas Municipal Water District Lower Bois d’Arc Lake Program

The Bois d’Arc Lake will span 16,641 acres, be two miles long, 90-feet tall, with an intake tower that stands at 110-feet tall upon completion. It will collect water and filters through the Raw Water Pipeline to the Leonard Water Treatment Plant (WTP). The 90-inch diameter Raw Water Pipeline will travel 35 miles from the dam, delivering untreated water to the treatment plant. The Leonard WTP will include six pumps to filter and treat 90 MGD of water then go through the Treated Water Pipeline.
