Copper Mountain Solar 5 is a 315 MW AC Solar project with a substation and transmission line. UES provided third-party materials testing and inspections as required for the owner to obtain a permit from the City of Boulder City. On-site improvements included field density testing and observations during utility backfill operations and access road subgrade. 

The UES structural services included reinforced concrete inspection, drilled pier foundations, driven pile foundations, structural steel inspection, epoxy, and mechanical anchor inspection.

West Henderson Hospital

The Valley Health System and UHS of Delaware is constructing a new hospital on a 40-acre campus. Phase I of this project involves the construction of the North tower, which will be seven stories, and the East tower, which will be five stories; both towers involve steel-frame construction, SidePlate beam to column connections, and full-pen welded column splice connections. The $385 million hospital project will include 150 beds across both towers, which will be approximately 400,000 SF. UES is currently working on Phase 1, which is tentatively scheduled to finish in mid-2024. In future phases, the hospital will grow to include 450 beds and other improvements.

UES’ scope of work includes Quality Assurance testing and inspections on grading, utility backfill, concrete, structural steel/welding, ultrasonic testing (NDT), masonry, spray-applied fireproofing, firestopping, EIFS, post-installed anchors, floor flatness, and levelness testing.

The UES Las Vegas team provided geotechnical recommendations, construction materials testing, and special inspections for the fourth building at the 120-acre, 1.6 million SF Tropical Distribution Center in North Las Vegas. The building is a new warehouse constructed with tilt-up panels and totals 246,400 SF of Class A industrial space with
convenient access to I-15 and 215 via Tropical Parkway. The building has 36-foot clear heights with 43 dock-high doors and two grade-level doors.

The construction also included a large truck court with 51 trailer parking spaces and parking for an additional 203 automobiles. Our services included geotechnical exploration and recommendations, review of the plans for conformance with that guidance, QAA Special Inspections for grading/soils, reinforced concrete, structural steel, epoxy and mechanical anchors, wood construction, and floor flatness/levelness. The UES team also provided field density testing and observations during on- and off-site improvements such as utility backfill operations, curb, gutter, and sidewalks.

This 72,529 SF Performing Arts Center, located adjacent the new Wellness & Aquatics Complex at Southwestern Community College, features a 500-seat theater, a 151-seat black box theater, instructional facilities, and a music/dance studio.

UES was contracted as the Geotechnical Engineer of Record, and provided compliance inspection services including soils, shop and field weld inspections, masonry inspection, and reinforced concrete inspection. Upon completion, the $59 million project achieved LEED Silver certification.

UES is providing construction materials testing and inspections on the new Millcreek City Hall. This six-story concrete and glass structure will feature a basement, ground-floor market and exposition place, four city and police operations floors, a sixth-floor community center reception hall, and an outdoor climbing wall. UES’ testing and inspection services include soil inspections; concrete inspections, including strand placement; steel bolting inspections; steel welding inspections; miscellaneous steel inspections, including roof and floor deck welding; mass timber inspections; post-installed anchor inspections; non-structural component inspections, including exterior cladding and mechanical/electrical components; and review of deferred submittals.

The most significant benefit that UES provides for this project is proactive preliminary inspections. During a pre-construction meeting for post-tension, our team identified design irregularities that were addressed before the work began, saving substantial time and the potential costs associated with revised construction. The Las Vegas Convention Center Expansion – Phase II (LVCC Phase II) project was a significant expansion and renovation of the LVCC to accommodate current needs and capture future trade show opportunities. The LVCC Phase II project added 1.4 million SF to the convention center facility, including at least 600,000 SF of new, leasable exhibit space. 

The UES team provided QAA materials testing and special inspections
for the building and its components during construction to verify construction compliance with the project’s design, engineering, and required codes. UES’ scope of work included the following testing and inspections:

Ballpark Village

Ballpark Village

The 3.5-acre Ballpark Village site is located adjacent to PETCO Park and represents the largest contiguous and undeveloped land remaining in downtown San Diego. JMI Realty and Greystar constructed a 37-story apartment tower and surrounding low-rise buildings upon a three-level (1,214-space) underground parking garage. The project also includes 55,000 SF of ground-floor retail space, and a pedestrian and vehicle thoroughfare.

The $250 million dollar project was constructed between April 2015 and
August 2018. The multifamily assets offer views of the Pacific Ocean,
San Diego Bay, Coronado Island, the Coronado Bridge, Balboa Park,
Point Loma, and the downtown skyline. Ballpark Village is part of a
master-planned development in the Ballpark District and a six-building,
mixed-use project.

UES provided all geotechnical engineering and consulting services and
all laboratory materials testing services during construction. Our services
include, but were not limited to, geotechnical engineering, geotechnical
consulting, soils observation and testing, installation and testing of
hydrostatic hold-down anchors, inspection and materials testing of
concrete, mortar, grout, masonry, high-strength bolts, structural steel,
waterproofing, fireproofing, and roofing testing. CTE engineered and
constructed a large diameter drilled pier or caisson for alternative support of the southwest corner of the tower building to eliminate an additional un-constructible detached oversized below-grade mat foundation.

1700 Pavilion is one of the latest additions to Downtown Summerlin, a growing area with entertainment, business centers, and residential properties. This project involved the construction of a ten-story, steel-framed building with concrete stair core and slab-on-metal decks, as well as a seven-story cast-in-place concrete parking garage with post-tensioned beams, decks, and girders. For the building, UES performed grading, reinforced concrete, structural steel, fireproofing, firestopping, and post-installed anchor inspections.

UES also performed geotechnical structural observations for foundations. For the parking garage, UES performed grading, reinforced concrete, structural masonry, and structural steel special inspections, as well as geotechnical structural observations for foundations.

I-395/SR 836/I-95 Project (Signature Bridge)

The I-395/SR 836/I-95 Project is a collaboration between the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Greater Miami Expressway Agency (GMX). The construction work is limited to State Road (SR) 836, starting from NW 17 Avenue, continuing through the SR 836/I-395/I-95 (Midtown) Interchange, and ending at the MacArthur Causeway Bridge. The work on I-95 spans from NW 8 Street to NW 29 Street. The project is expected to be completed in late 2027 at a cost of $840 million.

The Signature Bridge is the main focus of the project. It will transform the city’s skyline and become an iconic symbol for Miami and South Florida. The Signature Bridge and the adjoining structures will create vibrant community spaces underneath, linked together by a contiguous trail for the enjoyment of Overtown residents, nearby communities, and visitors.

UES partnered with the Archer Western – de Moya Joint Venture team for the design-build. For the design portion of the project, UES performed the geotechnical exploration, testing, engineering analysis, and recommendations, which included 19 bridges for segment 836, 20 bridges for segment 395, 2 bridges for segment 95, retaining walls, miscellaneous structures, roadways, and ponds. Some bridges were designed using driven concrete piles, while others used augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles.

The utilization of ACIP piles in bridges is a new development in the field of FDOT construction. UES, in collaboration with FDOT, played a significant role in making this idea a reality by contributing to the design and construction of the first-ever FDOT bridge of this magniyude that uses ACIP piles. This project marks a milestone in the history of FDOT and sets a new standard in the construction industry.

For the construction portion of the project, UES’s scope included supplying the management scope for contractor quality control and pile testing, which provides engineering, clerical, and quality control manager services. These services include maintaining the quality control plan, job guide schedule, contractor density log book, and MAC test reporting. The pile driving inspector includes Construction Training Qualification Program (CTQP) certified technicians for inspections and monitoring of all test piles and production piles.

TVA Solar Panel Field

TVA Solar Panel Field

This 40-acre solar array is a partnership between Ameresco and the City of Alton, Illinois to develop a 5 megawatt AC (MWAC)/7 megawatt DC (MWDC) solar array. The solar installation will be developed on a local closed municipal landfill site in the city.

UES provided geotechnical exploration services consisting of site reconnaissance, drilling six borings, laboratory testing, engineering analyses, and preparation of summary report. The project includes the installation of solar panels in a vacant field in East Alton, Illinois. The panels were mounted at-grade on concrete pedestals, which were oversized for uplift and overturning. Recommendations for design and construction of the proposed solar panel foundations were also provided.
