SV18 Data Center Facility

SV18 Data Center Facility

San Jose, California
Client: Confidential
Market Sector: Technology / Mission-Critical Infrastructure
Role: Geotechnical Engineering Partner

Client Need

As part of the continued growth in data infrastructure to support cloud computing and digital services, a new two-story data center—SV18—is being constructed in San Jose, California. The facility is designed to accommodate approximately 3,744 server cabinets within eight dedicated data halls, totaling 158,600 SF of secure, high-performance space.

To ensure long-term performance, structural stability, and efficient construction of this mission-critical facility, the client required geotechnical engineering support for foundation design and site preparation tailored to the region’s soil conditions and seismic activity.

How We Helped

UES provided geotechnical engineering services to support the design and construction of the SV18 Data Center. Our evaluation of the site’s subsurface conditions guided the foundation system for the 79,200 SF footprint structure and ensured it would meet both load-bearing and seismic performance criteria.

Scope of services included:

  • Geotechnical Investigation to evaluate subsurface conditions and site suitability
  • Foundation Recommendations for the structural steel superstructure and slab-on-grade elements
  • Assessment of Bearing Capacity, Settlement, and Seismic Considerations specific to the Bay Area
  • Coordination with Structural and Civil Design Teams to integrate geotechnical findings into construction planning

Project Highlights

  • Location: San Jose, California
  • Facility Size: 158,600 SF (two stories)
  • Data Capacity: 3,744 server cabinets across 8 data halls
  • Footprint: ~79,200 SF
  • Special Features: Dual electrical yards and rooftop mechanical platform

Client & Community Impact

UES’s geotechnical expertise provided a reliable foundation design for this high-value, high-resilience data center. Our insights into local soil and seismic conditions ensured that the SV18 facility could support continuous operations, critical load demands, and long-term structural integrity—delivering peace of mind in a region where uptime is essential.
