SJLP 161KV Transmission Line
SJLP 161KV Transmission Line
St. Joseph, Missouri
Market Sector: Energy / Transmission Infrastructure
Role: Geotechnical Engineering, Cone Penetration Testing, Pressuremeter Testing
Client Need
The project required detailed geotechnical investigation for a 161kV transmission line spanning approximately 20 miles through urban and downtown areas of St. Joseph, Missouri. The client needed subsurface data to inform foundation design, considering the presence of very soft, saturated alluvial soils.
How We Helped
UES performed drilling and rock coring along the transmission line route, completing 40 borings plus 4 additional borings for a new cut-in. We conducted pressuremeter testing with three tests per boring to evaluate soil stiffness and strength. To address challenging soil conditions, Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) soundings supplemented auger borings at selected structure locations, providing enhanced soil profiling accuracy.

Project Highlights
- Drilling and rock coring for 44 total borings
- Pressuremeter testing with multiple tests per boring
- Cone Penetration Testing to supplement auger borings in soft soils
- Comprehensive soil profiling for foundation design in urban settings
Client & Community Impact
The geotechnical data and analyses provided by UES supported safe and cost-effective foundation design for the transmission line, ensuring reliable energy delivery through St. Joseph’s urban corridor while mitigating risks related to soft soil conditions.
