Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts

This project consisted of the construction of a two-level, multi-purpose facility on approximately 13 acres in the heart of Orlando, Florida. The project’s first phase included the construction of a $201M, 250,000-SF facility. The initial structural steel framed building included a 2,700-seat Broadway-style theater (aka Amplified Hall), a 300-seat multi-purpose (community) hall for smaller performances, and a 300-seat banquet room.

Other venues in Phase One included the acoustic hall (1,700 seats), and a rehearsal hall/public plaza with approximately 3,000 seats. The project broke ground in Summer 2011 and the first phase complex opened in November 2014. In the early stages, most of the work was below ground adding to the design and construction challenges that included installing 700 underground grout displacement pilings to support and stabilize the building.

UES provided the threshold inspection services and exceeded the City’s “blueprint” goals of 27% of minority firm participation. UES also provided a variety of construction materials testing and miscellaneous services under other contract,) which included pile driving monitoring, pile load testing, pile dynamics analysis (PDA), foundation and structural steel inspections, and monitor well construction. UES also provided the geotechnical design engineering for this project, met with challenges that led to a number of design changes. UES was very flexible in changing scope and re-analyzing various foundation designs as the nature of the building has changed in response to funding.
